Description :
The commemorative coin of 5 Swiss francs issued in 1936 is the first of its kind in Switzerland, celebrating the national defense loan ("Wehranleihe") launched that year to strengthen the Swiss army in the face of growing tensions in Europe. Struck in 835 ‰ silver, originally it weighs 15 grams and measure 31 mm in diameter. Round in shape, and was demonetized on April 1, 1971.
Obverse: The piece represents Helvetia kneeling, facing right, holding a sword in her right hand and a dove in her left hand, symbolizing peace ready to defend itself. The inscription "HELVETIA" appears above, with the engraver's signature "M. WEBER" below.
Reverse: The reverse features the Latin inscription "PRO PATRIA ARMIS TUENDA" (For the Fatherland Defended by Arms) in four lines within a pearled rectangle, with the Swiss coat of arms at the top left, oak leaves on either side, and a military helmet above. The denomination "5 FR" and the mint letter "B" (Bern) are indicated at the bottom.
Slice : The edge of the coin features the embossed inscription "DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT", meaning "The Lord will provide".
