Product Name: 5 Swiss Francs Coin – 1944
Description :
The commemorative coin of 5 Swiss francs issued in 1944 celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of St. James on the Birs. Struck in 835 ‰ silver, originally it weighs 15 grams and measure 31 mm in diameter. Round in shape, and was demonetized on April 1, 1971.
Obverse: The coin depicts a wounded soldier, kneeling and facing right, wearing a hat. He is removing an arrow from his chest with his left hand while throwing a rock at the enemy with his right hand. The inscription "HELVETIA" appears at the top, with the engraver's signature "E. WEIDERKEHR" at the bottom.
Reverse: The reverse shows a Swiss cross surrounded by the inscriptions "MORI MALUNT QUAM SUPERARI" (They would rather die than be defeated), "ST. JAKOB AN DER BIRS", "MCDXLIV" (1444) and the year of minting "1944". The letter "B" indicates the mint of Bern.
Slice : The edge of the coin features the embossed inscription "DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT", meaning "The Lord will provide".
